摘要

At the dawn of the auto industry Henry Ford offered to build any car the buyer wanted — as long as it was black. General Motors came along and offered more choice and so began the trend toward individualization. Cars began to reflect our personalities, driving needs and pocket-books. By the 1980s, it became theoretically possible to assemble hundreds of thousands of unique versions of a given model, even though auto companies never produced that much variety.
