First BMW did it with the 7 Series, then the two-seat Z4, and now it's the turn of the 5 Series. The move away from the evolutionary design philosophy that was applied to most of BMW's models has continued with the new 5 Series sedan. But there is far more to this car than its styling; most significant is the decision to adopt an aluminum/steel hybrid body in the interests both of light weight and its effect on providing the car with virtually 50:50 front/rear weight distribution for enhanced handling. Aluminum is also used for the chassis. And BMW, working in collaboration with ZF Lenksysteme, introduces an active steering system complemented by the Dynamic Drive system already applied to the 7 Series. Dynamic Drive comprises active antiroll bars front and rear. Run-flat tires are also an option. Other technologies include adaptive headlights and a head-up display. BMW has remained loyal to its often-criticized i-Drive control system, which has been modified with the aim of making it more user-friendly. Engines include a wide choice of gasoline and diesels, one of the most impressive being the 530d with 160 kW (214 hp) and 500 N·m (369 lb·ft) at 2000 rpm. Development for the 5 Series took about four years, although research started in the early 1990s.
