The glamorous, pressure-cooker world of Formula One racing may seem to have little in common with more relatively mundane segments of the auto industry, but in fact top racing teams face many of the same challenges as car manufacturers and suppliers. Designing vehicles and components, contracting out the manufacturing of parts, assembling and manufacturing in-house, meeting deadlines, budget pressure, staff organization and management―these are all chores that car makers and top racing teams share, even if the resulting products differ greatly in production volume and unit cost.
