There was a time in the mid-1980s when the Toyota MR2 was one of the seminal small sports cars. Compact and light with cheeky good looks, it developed the Fiat X1/9 theme into a proposition that made as much sense as a sports car as it did as a two-seat town car. But the second-generation MR2 was a different beast entirely. Certainly it retained the mid-engined configuration, but the new model was bigger and more powerful, with the emphasis shifted towards the sporting coupe market sector.
