Meritor Automotive wants to take the idea of a roof module a giant step further than the moulded plastic top it makes in Gifhorn, Germany for the DaimlerChrysler Smart car. The company's Light Vehicle Systems division has been working for several years on pre-painted roof modules that would be glued into place on the assembly line, like a windscreen, after the seats, carpeting, instrument panel and other bulky items are installed through the open top of a car body.
