Protecting the environment, improving safety and applying information technology were pinpointed as the three avenues of innovation Toyota must travel in order to keep up with change and seize the opportunities it presents, said its chairman Hiroshi Okuda, speaking at a US Chamber of Commerce last month. He also encouraged co-operation among carmakers to accomplish these goals. As with most car companies, the environment is Toyota's big selling point at the moment. Okuda spoke enthusiastically of Toyota's new green technology, Hybrid Synergy Drive, used in the new 2004 Prius hybrid vehicle, one that may set the benchmark for future passenger green cars.
