The hype from Germany was that no matter what, Audi was to take centre stage at Geneva. Then, with a week to go, Mercedes-Benz made a late rally, threatening to steal Audi's thunder with an AMG bombardment, ironic then that it was the carmaker based in Munich that, in the end, blew away its German brethren, as Dean Slavnich found out. Back in January, it was the Americans and Japanese that scored the early points as they revelled in Detroit, overwhelming the press and public with a spectacular array of passenger vehicles and pick-up trucks. Chrysler and Toyota particularly caught the eye. The Europeans - in this case the Germans spurred mainly by Mercedes -very much took a back seat, biding their time.
