Electronics are poised to take control of the amount of engine noise that reaches car interiors. Car manufacturers and motorists will soon be able to vary both the level and nature of mechanical sound heard by occupants thanks to a novel development in the way power units are attached to the bodywork. Fresh techniques in sound engineering are claimed to be allowing four cylinder engines to feel as refined as motors with six cylinders - and giving six-cylinder units much of the demeanour associated with V8 power.
