Sealing supplier Freudenberg has developed a gas-lubricated face seal for turbochargers. These can reduce oil leakage, blow-by and emissions, making it easier for OEMs to achieve Euro 5 compliance.rnTraditional piston rings can allow relatively high levels of oil consumption. They let engine lubricant past and into the charge air. It is then burnt in the combustion chamber, increasing emissions.rnReducing any source of emissions will become more important as standardsrnbecome more stringent. Minimal changes are required to the turbo to accommodate these seals. This method of sealing could become even more valuable if turbocharged gasoline engines become commonplace too.
