A lifelike abdominal insert for paediatric crash dummies that could help prevent serious injuries to children is available for evaluation through the Society of Automotive Engineers. Ford developed the prototype with the University of Michigan, safety firms STR Systems and Takata, and a number of hospitals. This followed studies that indicated that children aged between four and eight are at higher risk of injuries to the spine and abdomen.
