A lifelike abdominal insert for paediatric crash dummies that could help prevent serious injuries to children is available for evaluation through the Society of Automotive Engineers. Ford developed the prototype with the University of Michigan, safety firms STR Systems and Takata and a number of hospitals. Studies indicate that 4- to 8-year-olds are at higher risk for injuries to the spine and abdomen. Dr Steve Rouhana, who works for Ford on advanced safety engineering said: "A typical crash dummy's pelvis area is square, which makes it easier for the safety belt to catch it. An average six year old pelvis is more rounded and the belt can slip above the bone causing injuries." The prototype insert is shaped more realistically and contains layers of liquid sili-cone. Six electrodes immersed in a conductive fluid act as sensors.
