PSA plans cheap,tough Russian SUV

PSA Peugeot Citroen and Mitsubishi will design and build mid-sized SUVs specifically for the Russian market for sale in 2011. A number of OEMs already sell SUVs in Russia, making only minor changes to models. But the reasons SUVs sell so well there - bad road surfaces, harsh weather and unforgiving driving habits - affect durability and make developing special solutions worthwhile. "It will be a Russian SUV priced and engineered for the Russian market," said PSA. "We're going 50-50 on a E?D300,000 plant in Kaluga, Western Russia with initial capacity of 160,000 units." The car will be PSA's first move into Russia and will rely on Mitsubishi's expertise in SUV-engineering and knowledge of the market.
