Once upon a time, when I was a boy, any car had a purpose so evident that it scarcely needed formal definition. Cars provided reliable transport from A to B, at reasonable speed, in fair comfort and safety, free from the often inconvenient timetables and fixed routes of public transport. Even sports cars reflected this purpose, merely sacrificing some of the comfort in exchange for a moderate dose of fun.
