Why does Bosch make its own semiconductors?

"Take an inverter: you spend a certain amount on the switch - the insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) - then you spend a lot to overcome parasitic effects such as heat dissipation and electromagnetic compatibility. Avoiding these at the IGBT level saves money at the higher topology levels. Another example is that you have to know if there's a current overload directly at the silicon. You can do that at a higher level with a current sensor on the board but this is indirect so you need a safety margin. We put one directly on the silicon so we can go closer to the limits because we identify critical situations faster. The same applies to temperature sensors.
