All-wheel drive on-demand is about to become more fuel efficient. ZF has developed a system that eliminates churning and friction losses, reducing consumption by 5%. The technology also provides a torque vectoring function. On-demand systems disconnect engine torque to the rear axle when the extra traction is not required but the driveline components still rotate whenever the vehicle is moving. The parasitic churning and friction losses increase fuel consumption. ZF's system is different.
