DOWNSIZING GETS A BOOST FROM FEDERAL-MOGUL

Federal-Mogul has developed coated cast-iron cylinder liners for downsized gasoline engines. The liners enable aluminium blocks to withstand higher combustion pressures but the special design also reduces oil consumption, improves heat transfer and increases stiffness. The firm's vice-president for powertrain technology, Gian Maria Olivetti, said: "Maximum second-order bore distortion can be as low as 11% of that experienced by corresponding cast-in liners, while the cylindrical distortion under operating loads is up to three times better. As a result, oil consumption is reduced by up to 40%."
