Three turbochargers boost BMW diesel

Bmw has applied three turbochargers to its 3.0-litre straight-six diesel. The result is 280kW and 740Nm, making it the most powerful engine of its type in the world, the firm claims. High performance gasoline engines appeal to consumers but their poor fuel consumption is bad for fleet average emissions. BMW's head of powertrain development, Dr Peter Neflscher, said: "You can run at very low speed with one small turbo and then you have the large turbo in series. Forfull-load, full-speed conditions you have a second small turbo as a bypass so even at full load we have a real two-stage system - and the most powerful diesel engine."
