The concept of a dual-mode form of vehicle propulsion has been put forward as the best option for the 21st century. Several vehicle manufacturers have presented theoretical studies, leading to concept vehicles and even a small number of roadgoing prototypes to assess the reaction of potential customers. Why has there been so much reluctance to produce these vehicles in reasonable quantities, when all these manufacturers claim their hybrids will provide the answer to what is essentially a contradiction in design parameters? The demand is for a vehicle that can retain individual mobility in city traffic and over long distances, comparable to current internal combustion powered vehicles, but with such a drastic reduction in toxic gaseous emissions, plus a similar reduction in CO2 emissions that no known internal combustion engine can provide.
