John Wood, 50, was educated at Cranbrook School, Kent, and Caius College, Cambridge, where he gained his engineering degree. He was a regular army officer from 1965 to 1987, first in the Royal Artillery and then in REME, spending a year at the Staff College in 1977. On retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel he joined RAC Motoring Services as Chief Engineer but resigned in 1991 to take up his present position at MIRA. Principal recreation is motor racing, especially hill climbs.
