The present paper described the histories of the material industries in Japan, mainly steel industries, to cope with the changes surrounding vehicles and to support the automotive industries. The development of the advanced high-strength sheet steels is an example contributing to the coexistence of safety and the improvement of fuel economy of vehicles. While the globalization is progressing, the creation of the innovative technologies is strongly demanded and the collaboration crossing not only industries but also the sectors from industry, government and university all over Japan, is expected to play an indispensable role for future.%ガソリン式自動車は約125年前の1886年にダイムラーとベンツにより発明された．自動車は人類にとって魅力的な移動手段であり，生産台数は2007年において全世界で8.4億台を超え，今後もBRICsを中心に増加が予想される．
