Packaging costs within the Australian wine industry are equivalent to approximately 20% of the revenue and 50% of the gross margin per case according to the latest Deloitte annual benchmarking survey (2006). In an industry being forced to discount in order to maintain sales volumes, packaging can cost up to an astounding 10 times the profit margin per case of wine. There may be simple solutions to these problems that the wine industry can utilise: Lean Manufacturing is a business improvement strategy with an emphasis on quality management and a strong focus on customer value. Simple tools and techniques can be used to measure and improve performance across a business.
