Editor Paul Ham's name is well known as the author of Kokoda and Vietnam: The Australian War so it comes as no surprise to see his name associated with this project. He chanced upon extracts fromrnthe diary while undertaking re-rnsearch at the Australian War Memorial. Dipping into this book at random, you find such pearls as "listened to test cricket on the BBC until frequency jammed by Peking". It reminds us that day-to-day life in a war zone is punctuated by the everyday activities of an ordinary life. The diaries were originally intended for John Bullen's family but I think anyone with an interest in Australia's involvement in Vietnam will find his diaries interesting, enlightening and in many cases, darkly funny.
