At a time of heightened anxiety and persistent insecurity in the world, the World Council of Nuclear Workers and the International Institute for Sustainable Peace wish to underline that the responsible spread of nuclear energy offers real hope for sustainable economic, ecological and social development. This principle finds its clearest expression today in the work of the Director General of the IAEA, Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei. Dr. ElBaradei has worked to support the safe, efficient and secure use of nuclear technology for applications that include electricity production, desalination, food and agriculture innovations and critical medical procedures. Moreover, he has repeatedly stressed that addressing the foundations of global insecurity is the only long-term means of preventing the proliferation or use of nuclear weapons and ensuring sustainable global peace. In bringing prosperity and innovation to the world, the peaceful uses of nuclear energy appear to be playing an increasingly significant role. Dr. ElBaradei's ongoing work is of incalculable importance.
