Summary of General Discussion on 'Advancing Tacit Knowledge: Malaysian Family SMEs in Manufacturing'

Wing Thye Woo commended the author on providing an incisive political-economy diagnosis of how ethnicity-based affirmative action policy had thwarted the emergency of a dynamic small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector in the Malaysian economy. He made a number of suggestions for improving the quality and readability of the paper: clearly spell out the various Malaysia-specific terminology used; add a comparative case study of the two national car companies, Proton and Perodua; discuss linkages between SMEs and multinational enterprises (MNEs); and examine why SMEs have continued to remain largely domestic market oriented.
