The pinpointing of the points of origin of hostile indirect fire was at one time only attainable through use of gun sound ranging, an ageing technique which, despite improvements in technology, still left much to be desired in terms of accuracy and response time. The use of radar has changed all that and today's weapon locating systems can locate enemy systems in seconds, permitting quick mounting of effective counter-fire missions. Here, ADJ's Electronics Editor, Mike Witt, surveys some of the systems in current operation and examines the technological state-of-the-art.
