Samsung E-M Prescribes New Parts as Remedy for Flagging Market

Makers of electronic parts and components face a year of relative famine, after feasting for the past few years. One year ago, workers at Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd. (Samsung E-M) were racing to keep up with the rush of orders. In the first quarter of 2001, though, sales dropped 16 percent to 805 billion won, compared to the first quarter of 2000. Management traced this drop to slumping sales for multiple-layer ceramic chip capacitors and similar components. Usually, the maker generates about 40 percent of its parts and component sales in mobile handsets and portable computers.
