Dominant cultural ideals of masculinity have long defined the field of national security, which reduces topics of high complexity to irrational and personal ones.This is best demonstrated by the online quarrel between two leaders regarding the size of their nuclear buttons.The solution to this dangerous phenomenon? Increasing diversity.This 64-page Ploughshares Fund report gathered 12 female national security leaders to offer a new, feminist vision on the issues of international security and nuclear nonproliferation. In the collection of essays, the authors advocate for more inclusive attitudes toward diverse populations, especially women and minorities, in order to achieve sustainable improvements. They also urge nuclear-armed states to adopt theTreaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which uses a humanitarian lens to focuses on the horrifying consequences of a nuclear war. A more compassionate and sustainable perspective on national security can only be reached through encouraging diversity, and the report offers some concrete steps to strengthen the process.
