Tiger and Apache: Front Line Warrior Self-protection

The Tiger and Apache are both equipped with a comprehensive self-protection systems. The proven Apache entered service in 1984 to fight in a then possible high-intensity Central Europe conflict. The type has since been exported to Egypt, Greece, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Britain (as the Wah-64). The U S Army version is equipped with an American EW suite consisting of an AN/APR-39 A(V) radar warning receiver from Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, an AN/ALQ-144 IR jammer (BAE Systems), a Goodrich AN/AVR-2 laser warning receiver, and AN/ALQ-136(V) radar jammer developed by ITT, and chaff dispensers. Israeli AH-64D helicopters are fitted with the Elbit Seraph self-protection system, including its SPS-65 missile warner and SPJ-40 radar jammer. US Army Longbow Apaches were to be fitted with the ITT AN/ALQ-211 Sircm (Suite of Integrated Radio Frequency Countermeasures). Britain's AH Mk 1 Apaches are fitted with the BAE Systems Hidas (Helicopter Integrated Defensive Aids Suite) which was also chosen by Kuwait and Greece. The Hidas, which includes the Sky Guardian 2000 radar warning receiver, entered service on the AH Mk 1 in July 2003. Dutch AH-64D helicopters are being fitted with Northrop Grumman Dircm turrets integrated in stub wing pods.
