Archives in libraries: What librarians and archivists need to know to work together

The cover tells one what to expect: two bays of shelves, one filled with books, the other with archive boxes, stand glaring at each other. They represent a common situation: many institutions, especially in academic environments, may well only employ one or two archivists. But where might they fit into the hierarchy of such organisations? Not infrequently they are placed under the aegis of the library, often in a generic 'special-collections-and-early-books-etc' reservation.
