Christian Matt sees elderly people as an integral part of society and therefore believes that it is essentially misguided to build old person's homes on greenfield sites, however beautiful these may be. And so for Matt and his office partner Andreas Dorner the site on which the town of Rankweil in Vorarlberg (population 11, 600) planned to build a new home for its senior citizen was ideal. This is because it is in the centre of the town, albeit in the second row -and thus in a quiet location - on Bahnhofstrasse (Station Street), the pulsating centre of the community. It connects to this street through a newly created public space whose design is still to be completed.
