Village square in Stans by Gsottbauer Architekturwerkstatt

The best proof that an accident can, at times, also have a positive result is provided by the public square in the Tyrolear village of Stans (population 1900) which was designed by Manfred Gsottbauer. Today it is almost unimaginable that, only a short time ago, a building stood on the site of this almost urban square that measures 1850 square metres in area. This building blocked the view of the somewhat elevated neo-Gothic church, which provides one the few architectural highlights in this village that is divided in two by the regional road. Following the destruction of this building by a fire and the acquisition of the site by the village council, at the beginning of 2013 the village renewal commission of the state of Tyrol invited five architects to come up with ideas for a village square. The Gsottbauer Architekturwerkstatt, which has experience in designing calm, relaxed public spaces - for instance Wiltener Platzl in Innsbruck - won this competition. In Stans it has succeeded in creating a clearly defined village centre that had previously been lacking.
