'Drafting Modernism. Rudolf Weiss, a Student of Otto Wagner'

The drawings by one of the last stu-dents of Otto Wagner currentl on show in an exhibition in the Wien Museum offer an exemplary insight into this world-renowned training centre for modern architecture. The estate of drawings left by Rudolf Weiss (1890-1980) comprises 118 sheets, which were kept together for years in his family before, thanks to a donation by its Friends Association, the Wien Museum was able to acquire large parts of the collection in 2014. After a complex restoration process about half of the drawings are now being shown in an exhibition. Although Rudolf Weiss, who studied from 1910 to 1913 in Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts where he was one of Otto Wagner's last students, never subsequently achiever anything like the same importance as many of Wagner's other, more famous students, and although the buildings he designed as a self-employed architect (1945-62) in the area of Lower Austria remain largely unknown, the drawings from his early years offer us a deep insight and profound gain in knowledge about the Wagner School and its time from original material. Only few original drawings by students of Wagner (who was full professor from 1894 to 1912) have survived, and only a few areas of Otto Wagner's extensive estate in the Wien Museum are augmented by works by his students.
