Where once a dreariness produced by uniform, rectangular prefabricated panels and far too hard cuts prevailed, a lively roofscape now rises above the old building with a wide, inviting roof terrace and amorphous buildings that incline with a generous gesture towards the schoolyard, transforming it into an intimate space for life. All the built additions, which as regards colour and space relate closely to the existing building but differ from it entirely in terms of material, are in a constant state of flux. All the newly added floors were made using prefabricated hollow box and rib elements and solid 76-mm-thick glulam walls. Transferring the loads was unproblematic as it was not just the external walls that could be used but also the loadbearing internal walls of the prefabricated panel building type "Erfurt" from the school series 80. The decision to use timber building elements significantly reduced the construction time on site, which could be limited to just three periods each six weeks long and made it possible to build while the school was still in operation. In contrast, fitting out the interior required considerably more time but interfered only minimally with teaching work.
