Kindergarten St. Gebhard, Bregenz

Social centre The parish of St. Gebhard is in the Vorkloster district of Bregenz. Residential buildings for so-called ordinary people, with industrial premised dotted between them shape the character of this district on the western edge of the city. The increasing pressure of urban development has considerably upgraded Vorkloster (the urban area in front of the Sacred Heart convent). The parish of St. Gebhard with its striking church tower, presbytery and kindergarten is an important social centre for this city district. The short end with the entrance and the tower turns towards Holzackerstrasse in the north-east. Built of exposed concrete, the church and the kindergarten associated with it were designed in the 1960s by architect Guntram Maetzler. He placed the kindergarten and the parish hall to form an "L" at one end of the church. In line with the street and parallel to the church nave they define a sheltered garden with mature trees. The groups face south-east, towards the green space; in the south-west the gym hall borders the kindergarten, followed by the primary school/New Middle School.
