On 13 May 2000, the city of Enschede was hit by what has gone down in history as the 'fireworks disaster'. Twenty-two rrnpeople lost their lives and nearly a thousand were injured when a storage depot containing fireworks used for public displays rrnexploded. The district of Roombeek was reduced to a gaping hole in the city and hundreds of houses and businesses were rrndestroyed or damaged beyond repair. The urban developer Pi de Bruijn has been contracted to rebuild the area.
