The Catalan architectural review Quaderns organized a seminar in Barcelona in 1984. Its editor at that time, Josep Lluis Mateo, much later remembers the background in this way: "ornamental historicist postmodernism was at a peak in keeping with some of the theories proposed in the late 1960s (here I refer above all to the books by Rossi and Venturi). My situation was that of a dissident, looking for other solutions and hoping to find allies in opposition to something which, while at the height of its splendour, was verging on decadence. ... Asplund and Lewerentz were discoveries that offered solutions to the postmodern dilemma. A simple look at their work was enough to see the fictitious condition, pure set design, of much of the architecture of the time".
