One early summer's day in 1975, a tall, black-clad figure could be seen walking along the streets of Lund, a medieval university town in southern Sweden. Few people knew that the man was the legendary Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975). He was about to turn 90 and had just completed the prototype for a chair made of laminated wood and reinforcement bars, designed for a colleague suffering from back ache. Some of his wallpaper designs from the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition had recently been reprinted. He was the last survivor of the generation that formed the architecture of the 20th century and included Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe and his more famous compatriot Gunnar Asplund. Although Lewerentz had established his office in Gamla stan (The Old Town) in Stockholm as early as 1911, he was the last of this illustrious group to receive attention.
