Sanshing is a traditional agricultural township in Yilan. The township is located in the middle sections of Lanyang River and Annong River, bordered by mountains on three sides. The region features terrace fields of pears, rice, Salix argyracea, and shallots. How should the township office for an agricultural region like Sanshing look like? This was the question of concern during the initial stage of design. It reminded us to take the time to examine the site from historical, agricultural, and social perspectives in order to incorporate the unique agricultural landscape of Sanshing into our design. We referenced the historical Sanshing settlement of "Sa Nan Chiu Shui" - one of the eight viewpoints of Lanyang. It is also the site of the old Kebalan settlement, facing the mountains and rivers to the south. We re-positioned the township office to face south, allowing visitors to enjoy the southern mountains and reminisce about the natural and historical contexts. Revolving around this orientation, the mountain range framed the path of movement, merged the path to the second floor with the terrace field scenic platform on the rooftop of the third floor, and unified the office with the mountain. The design returned the office to a historical orientation, allowing the spatial layout of the office to become a reminder of the connection between the settlements and mountain range of Sanshing.
