Hirosawa Pond in Saga, Kyoto is full of natural beauty in all seasons. The view to the Pond forms the lush surroundings for the Museum. Mokichi Okada was a religious leader, art connoisseur and philosopher, who also built the MOA Museum, renowned for its art collection. Artistic quality, harmony of natural and architectural beauty and integration of tradition and innovation in a beautiful creative statement was the project brief. "Separation of Functions", "Radical New Roof Structure" and "Preservation of Existing Trees" were the guiding principles for the design, which combine with the handiwork of traditional artisans and nature in its creation of a new aesthetic. The roof is formed of 3.2mm thick steel plates folded into the form of human hands in prayer. The folds form air spaces, which bring natural light into the internal spaces and greatly improve the thermal insulation. This integrates structure, environment and energy reduction into a futuristic Modern Japanese Style. The Museum is open to the public free of charge and will provide strollers with a casual stop and a fresh appreciation of the harmony between natural and manmade beauty in a sustainable architecture whose value will increase over years.%京都嵯峨広沢の池の風景は.
