When William E. Heinecke, an American who first came to Thailand in the early 1960s, decided to build a Four Seasons resort on Koh Samui, he selected a steep site in a former coconut grove and set aside a piece of land for a vacation house for himself, his wife, Kathleen, and their family. He entrusted both his private residence and 14 similarly luxurious villas, as well as 60 one-bedroom villas, to architect/designer/landscape architect Bill Bensley, another American expatriate based in Bangkok, and gave him a free hand: Bensley had previously worked on three other Four Seasons hotels in Thailand owned by Heinecke's company, Minor International.
