Iceland experienced extraordinary growth in the 2000s, but by October 2008 had fallen into the deepest and most rapid financial meltdown recorded in peacetime history when its three major banks all collapsed in the same week. Iceland has the lowest population density in Europe, barely three inhabitants per square kilometre. Almost two-thirds of the total population of 318,452 lives in the Reykjavik Capital Area (RCA), which consists of seven municipalities.
