Still another journal on aquatic sciences! Is this one really necessary, and if so, what makes it different from the others? Well, I have been in the business of studying lakes and their environments for almost half a century, in part as an academic scientist, in part as manager and advisor. Thus, I have experienced firsthand the tremendous transition from the primarily curiosity-driven approach to the study of the aquatic environment which dominated the academic world of my early years, to studies more and more driven by the need to understand how our lakes, rivers, and seas are affected by the changing world of human society. Our masters, who led us on the right path toward an appreciation of how aquatic ecosystems function, early recognized the need to integrate the wisdom of many disciplines in order to fully understand the intricacy of such systems, but they would hardly have anticipated the complexity to which the new generation of environmental scientists are now exposed in their daily scientific endeavours.
