This paper presents an analysis of the transient stability of monolith conductors for a 0.5 MWh, 30 MW SMES system. Two configurations are considered an enthalpy stabilized and a cryostable conductor. The two dimensional transient stability model includes steady-state and transient heat transfer, current diffusion in the stabilizer, current sharing between stabilizer and strands, and thermal resistance between the superconducting cable and the stabilizer. The stability margin is determined for the enthalpy stabilized conductor and the dependence of the conductor stability on conductor parameters is analyzed. For the cryostable conductor, the stability model is used to determine the characteristics of the conductor recovery dynamics.
