Editorial: Nobel Prizes honor ground-breaking innovations in applied science

The awarding of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura and Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Eric Betzig, Stefan W. Hell, and William E. Moerner filled me with admiration for the accomplishments of the new Nobel Laureates. It also generated a touch of nostalgia. While I never worked directly on nitrides, I have worked in related areas and had colleagues who were very active in the field, so I have been following developments.
