摘要

In this study, the role of microbial activities on the properties and characteristics of the buffer material is examined. Since little direct experimental evidence relating to clay-microbe interaction in the nuclear waste repository buffer exists, extrapolation of information related to microbiological weathering and dissolution of clay minerals to the repository environment is made. Biologically-mediated mineral transformations are discussed, in addition to their potential effect on buffer performance and the potential impact on predictions for safety assessment for underground repositories.
