In 1986, IBM introduced its first lap-top computer, the IBM PC Convertible, which weighed 13 lbs. That same year, Maytag acquired Magic Chef, and Sweden's Electrolux picked up White Consolidated's brands, including Frigidaire. Compact discs were edging out vinyl records, and the U.S. Congress passed the first law against computer hacking. Change was in the air, and the only thing for certain was that more change was to come. That year also gave us the Challenger and Chernobyl disasters, grim reminders that technology is not infallible.
