ANTHROPOLOGISTS IN BARCELONA ON MIGRANTS

In July 1996 I was a Ph.D student about to begin fieldwork on Iranian migrants in Tokyo. Half conscious that academic conferences are something one should really only attend after fieldwork, I nonetheless made the journey to Barcelona for the EASA Conference held from 12 to 15 July. What attracted me was the overall theme of the conference - Culture and Economy -plus the fact that two large workshops were dedicated to the theme of migration, my subject. It would, I thought, be a kind of prep- aration for my fieldwork, and besides, as I was going to be away - in the field - for at least a year, it would be some time before I next heard a presentation. Here was a chance to get a concentrated dose of anthropology presentations to make up for all that I would miss.
