摘要

Just 20 years ago, we were optimizing methods to culture bone cells. Today, through the use of genetically manipulated mouse models, the application of genomics and proteomics to bone biology, and the systematic cataloging of gene mutations of human disease, we have seams of new information on how the skeleton develops and is thereafter remodeled. In addition, the identification of new obligatory molecules for both bone resorption and formation has led to a flurry of interest in new drug development. Skeletal biology and skeletal medicine has truly emerged as its own discipline that transcends specialties as diverse as developmental biology, cell and molecular physiology, mathematics, clinical biophysics, rheumatology, and orthopedic surgery, among many others.
