Short communication: occupational cancer epidemiology: a worked example

In this short communication, we show how the latest finding of a lung cancer excess in chrome bath wor- kers may be used to make predictions about the effects of lifetime working at different levels of hexavalent chromium exposure(CrVI). The paper is intended to serve three purposes: to provide worked example for how such quantitative predictions may be made; to provide information for any future review of occu- pational exposure limits for CrVI compounds, and to show how levels of occupational cancer risk which might be judged to be tolerable equate with epidemi- ological summaries such as standardised mortality ratios.
