'Take Some Wine'

Colonel Zenas Bliss, a prewar friend of Burnside who commanded the 7th Rhode Island, was passing army headquarters when his old buddy hailed him to tell him of his demotion. Bliss found a disgusted Burnside drowning his sorrows in a case of wine. One day while In camp, I received an order detailing me as President of a Court Martial to meet at Army Headquarters, and I went up there. It was early in the morning, perhaps nine o'clock when I approached General Burnside's tent, which stood at the head of a little street, formed of the tents of his staff officers. As I went towards his tent, I saw the General in his shirt sleeves standing in the door of his tent, with a tumbler and a bottle of champagne in his hands.
